“During 2001, I was awarded an Arts & Humanities Research Board Postgraduate Award to study an MA in Textiles at Manchester Metropolitan University.
At the beginning of the course, my research focused on fusing elements of drawing with textiles. However, as the course progressed I became interested in exploring themes within my work.
As a graduate and an emerging artist, my work was often introspective, sometimes autobiographical. I became interested in exploring themes which included self-portraiture, the projection of identity and the depiction of gender and sexuality.
The figure became central to my work and I explored different themes through, drawing, print, photography, sculpture and embroidery. My research outputs at the end of the course were exhibited in an exhibition called Echo at the Holden Gallery in Manchester.”
